What is a colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is a procedure that is usually done while you’re asleep. A doctor uses a small camera to check your colon for signs of cancer or polyps. In many cases, they can remove the polyps during the colonoscopy.
Is it uncomfortable?
Most people are sedated for the procedure and feel nothing. A very small group of people have mild cramping for up to a day after the procedure.
How bad is the prep?
It’s easier than it used to be. You drink less prep solution and you can mix it with your favorite clear drink. We’ll guide you through the process.
Will I need time off work?
You’ll need the day of the procedure off. Prep usually starts after 5 p.m. the day before. You’ll need someone to stay with you and drive you home after the procedure, as you may feel groggy that day. But most people are back to normal the next day.
What does it cost?
Many insurance plans cover screening colonoscopies for people age 45 and older. If your colonoscopy is to diagnose a problem you are having or something is found and needs treatment, the test may be considered diagnostic and costs can change. We’ll help you check your coverage ahead of time and talk through payment options if needed.
